Can Plywood be used Externally?

Plywood in all its design glory surely can and should only be used for internal settings, right?

Fortunately for architects, designers and builders, plywood can be used externally too, if done so correctly, that is. Maxiply Birch plywood is the product you need as it boasts a waterproof glue line with technicalities of Marine Grade, with no core-gaps and the highest quality veneers, making it a perfect pick for external settings.

Using plywood externally

So, how is plywood used for external use successfully?

Plywood for external applications is suitable as long as it’s kept out of direct sunlight and away from harsh weather conditions.

Why must plywood stay out of direct sunlight and weather conditions?

  • Sunlight can cause unwelcomed discolouration over time.
  • Moisture brought about by Australia’s potential for harsh weather conditions can cause the plywood to grow mould and fungus.

All Maxiply plywood products are manufactured using high-quality finishes and our Birch plywood with added waterproofing can resist moisture, too,

Remember with the Australian climate being at times, unpredictable, be mindful of where plywood is used if used externally. See how external plywood has been used successfully in the Burrinja Culture Centre entrance way and as an architectural feature at Lang Lang sports pavilion.

How Maxiply makes this possible

Many of our plywood products can be applied externally with the help of our UV exterior oil.

How does the UV exterior oil work?

  • The UV exterior oil acts as a sunlight inhibitor which thereby prevents mould and fungus from growing if they were ever to get into the plywood board(s).

To ensure optimal protection for external plywood applications, all edges must be sealed on site and the board must be pre-finished in the aforementioned UV oil.

Don’t forget to reapply the UV exterior oil every year or so for optimal maintenance and external aesthetics and function.

What is soffit plywood?

  • A soffit is an exterior or interior architectural feature and structure, often horizontally and aloft underside of any construction element – seen commonly as an arch, balcony or overhanging eaves.

At Maxiply, our expert range of plywood for ceilings ensure suitability for both internal and external settings, with or without perforations. We have a range of exterior oils allowing for design capabilities for ply soffit linings and eaves.

Explore exterior plywood results

Lang Lang Sporting Hub located in Brighton, Victoria is a prime and proud example of utilising plywood externally to achieve outstanding results.

Architect Cohen Leigh required an attractive exterior feature and Maxiply’s own Maxi Panel Baltic Birch White Terrace proved the perfect choice to achieve this.

We coated the plywood in a hard-wax oil to stabilise UV and positioned in a semi-protected area outside of direct sunlight and harsh weather exposure.

Maxiply are more than happy to provide samples and advice to ensure you will receive exceptional plywood products and services.
