Maintaining the Hard-Wax Oil System

If you‘ve worked with our pre-finished plywood panels before, you will have seen firsthand the durable and attractive finish of our hard-wax oil system. Not only does it look fantastic, the hard-wax oil system offers enhanced protection against damage, as it penetrates deeply inside the wood to protect the timber from the inside, rather than simply forming a film to coat.

When correctly coated with hard-wax oil, plywood panels are dirt and water resistant, however, to keep your panels looking their best for longer, it’s likely that some maintenance will be required, especially in commercial or high-traffic interior spaces. There’s also a big chance that your panels will at stages become marked or scratched. The good news is that the hard-wax oil system has been designed to make ongoing maintenance and small scale repairs fast and easy. And if there is there is widespread wear and tear due sunlight, moisture or other extreme factors, you can apply a new coat to restore your panels to look their best. We explain how in more detail below.

Tips for cleaning hard-wax coated plywood panels

If your plywood panels are located in a space that is frequented by people, it’s inevitable that over time some marks from general use will appear. For small areas that require frequent spot cleans the Osmo Spray Cleaner is a great choice. The pre-mixed solution comes in a trigger pack which can be easily stored and kept on hand to be used as needed. It’s quick and easy to spray it on to any plywood surface, including walls, ceilings and joinery, and the formula is biodegradable and mild on skin which is another plus. It is not advisable to use regular household or harsh chemical detergents that are designed to break down grease and oil as it will do the same to your finished surface. Be sure to check the active ingredients and their use before applying.

How to rejuvenate hard-wax coated surfaces

If your panels are looking a little faded or dull due to heavy use, giving them some TLC to rejuvenate their appearance can make a huge difference. For smaller areas, you can use Osmo’s Liquid Wax Cleaner Spray, which comes in a ready to use pack that makes it easy to spray on as needed. For light wear, spray it on sparingly in an even, thin coat, then give the timber a light buff.

If you are dealing with stubborn stains, using a fine, white abrasive pad, or fine grade steel wool can work well. Once you’ve removed the stain, spray a light coat of wax spray and lightly buff and it should look like new. If an area is scratched or badly worn, or has been exposed to extreme conditions, for best results we recommend getting a professional in to sand the area to remove the damage, then add a new coat of hard-wax oil.

A little maintenance goes a long way

While a key benefit of the hard-wax oil system is the minimal maintenance that is required, you will save yourself time and effort in the long run if you conduct regular checks and spot cleans of your plywood panels to keep them looking A1. Keep a spray bottle of cleaner on hand and attend to marks as soon as possible. Keeping on top of it takes minimal time and effort and will result in an interior that looks great for longer.
