Project
BG Architecture / Newpol Constructions
Challenging the conventions of the traditional clinical environment, Alfred Health’s Ngamai Wilam is a groundbreaking residential eating disorder treatment centre located in the leafy Melbourne suburb of Armadale.
Project background
Designed by BG Architecture, the treatment centre caters for up to 12 participants at any one time and includes a mix of inviting shared spaces and serene private bedrooms. Providing trauma-informed, recovery-focused 24-hour care, the centre has been purpose built to provide care to adult patients who have experienced an eating disorder and are seeking a period of intensive support.
Project goals and objectives
Unlike most healthcare settings, Ngamai Wilam feels more like a home than a hospital, with the thoughtfully constructed design including ample room for visitors, specialists and participants to spend time together, while also providing private rooms for solitude as needed.
To promote a sense of calm and create healthy and welcoming spaces, the design incorporates a range of soothing timber elements enhanced by abundant natural light, with plywood accents adding to the bright and spacious look and feel.
Plywood elements
Our plywood products are used extensively for the joinery applications within the bedrooms, chosen not only for their aesthetic qualities, but also for the longevity of our panels, which makes them highly suited for use in commercial spaces.
Beautiful built-in desks with storage crafted from Maxi Panel provide a practical and attractive place to study, work, read or be creative, while in-built shelving and robes featuring Maxi Film offer ample space to store belongings and display personal effects.
For the desks, the designers chose Maxi Panel Rock Maple in Natural Sand to bring warmth to the space, with the added benefit of durability and ease of installation further adding to the appeal. Our popular joinery panel Maxi Film in White is a highlight within the built-in robes, with the exposed plywood edge further adding to the aesthetics and the colouring blending seamlessly with the surrounding neutral tones.
