3 Reasons Plywood is a Sustainable Option for Your Ceiling

Choosing a material for your ceiling is an important decision. Not only does the material need to fit with the look, feel and budget of your project, it also needs to tick all the right boxes in terms of sustainability.

When we talk about sustainability in construction and design, we’re looking to use building practices and materials that do not deplete natural resources. So is plywood a sustainable choice for your new ceiling? It certainly can be. Let’s take a closer look at the sustainable features of plywood to see how it stacks up.

Sustainably sourced timber

If your plywood is sourced from a certified responsibly managed plantation, you can be confident you are choosing a sustainable material for your ceiling. For the best environmental outcome, it’s essential to only work with timber that has been accredited through the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC®️) global forest certification system, as this is the most respected and credible certification system operating today.

Choosing FSC®️-certified products provides you and your clients with the peace of mind that the timber has been sourced from a responsibly managed forest. At Maxiply, both our Baltic Birch and Hoop Pine timbers are FSC®️ Certified-C139021. This allows you to select from a wide range of plywood panels to achieve your desired result for your ceiling, including the popular all-rounder Maxi Panel which is available in lots of colours and finishes and Maxi Perforated Panels, the best choice for acoustics and aesthetics in your interior space.

Minimise waste in manufacturing

The amount of waste produced by the construction industry is immense, but when you choose plywood, you are working with a far more efficient material. Compared to traditional lumber production where the amount of wood that is wasted is quite high, plywood manufacturing generates much less waste.

This is because more of the timber can be utilised when making the plywood panels and products and much of the waste that is produced can be utilised for other purposes too. For example, at Maxiply, some of our offcuts and sawdust are diverted for use in future projects and some are sold to businesses and turned into solid timber products. We also donate excess plywood materials and sawdust to charities such as animal shelters and to organisations who provide assistance in cleaning up after natural disasters.

Choose natural finishes for a healthier environment

When making plywood, adhesives are used to bond the layers together, and in the past, toxic chemicals such as Formaldehyde were often used. These chemicals are bad for the health of the environment, and thankfully there use has significantly decreased in the last few decades.

In addition, toxic chemicals are still used frequently to stain and finish some plywood products. At Maxiply, all our plywood products are finished using natural waxes. This is especially important when designing ceilings for homes and public spaces, to promote a healthy environment both inside and out.

Design possibilities with sustainable plywood

When you choose sustainable plywood for your interior ceiling, the possibilities for customisations are immense. A fantastic example of what can be achieved can be seen in the Cobram Library project, where our sustainable Maxi Panel ply product was used to create an impressive ceiling where ‘fins’ were carefully positioned to act as a visual wayfinder to subtly guide visitors through the space. Another stunning example of a memorable sustainable ply ceiling is inside the Basin Beach House, where Maxi Panel lined the ceiling to create ‘waves’ and a beautiful ripple effect that perfectly matches the coastal location.
