ACMI Redevelopment by
BKK Architects

Maxiply is now showing at the new ACMI redevelopment! The much anticipated redevelopment sees the popular Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) at Federation Square updated for the first time since it opened. As part of the architecturally iconic Federation Square, the refurbishment needed to equally visionary, yet with its own personality. The redevelopment establishes ACMI as “one of the world’s leading hubs for screen culture, education and innovation”, explains the architect, BKK.

Maxi Panel in Black Knight features prominently behind the front desk, subtly revealing is beautiful timber grain to complement timber used in desk itself and the zinc cladding of Federation Square.

Maxi Veneer in Blackbutt NFG brings native Australian hardwood into the exhibition spaces. The stunning panels bring warms and textural richness to the spaces. The stair and amphitheater space is a real highlight where people can gather and wait for friends much like the iconic steps of Fed Square, but here they’re constructed from native Australia hardwood with balustrade details to match in Maxi Perforated Panels.

A palette of red, black and timber throughout celebrates cinema, recalling timber-backed, plush red velvet seats, the lush curtain receding and the dimming light of the movie theatre experience.

Maxi Perforated Panels are also recruited to offer acoustic attenuation throughout the project, an important consideration in both cinemas and large public spaces like ACMI. The use of Maxi Perforated Panels in this setting meant the architect could use the same timber throughout the exhibition spaces whether for acoustic purposes or not for a cohesive and considered look.

The ACMI redevelopment brings the rich history of the moving image to life thanks to a beautiful new design which celebrates the architectural legacy of Federation Square while offering a fresh new perspective for ACMI moving forward.
