Three Unconventional Uses for Plywood Panels

With their natural beauty and versatility, it’s easy to see why plywood panels are a popular choice for interior walls and ceilings. However, in recent times their appeal is growing, as more and more designers and specifiers discover their broad range of applications and ability to transform a space through unique eye-catching applications.

From bold shapes and forms to vibrant splashes of colour, plywood uses are vast, providing an array of exciting design opportunities both inside and out. So in this article, we’re sharing three innovative plywood uses to inspire your next design.

Decorative features

With the ability to create shapes and textures that add depth and visual interest to interiors, plywood offers immense possibilities. An example of the ability to customise plywood wall panels to suit can be seen in the stunning Safya Group fitout, where concrete and plywood were seamlessly paired to bring a clean, contemporary look to the front reception. Enhancing the design, ply battens (customised from Maxi Panel Slats) extended above the reception counter and were also used throughout for privacy screens, effortlessly bringing calm to the space and maintaining a connection with the shapes and lines of the company logo.

Meanwhile, in the Cobram Library project, plywood furniture and decorative accents elevate the design to a whole new level. Maxi Edge is the ideal choice for the reception counter and desks, while the magnificent ceiling fins are cleverly positioned to subtly guide visitors through the space.

Vibrant colours

With our versatile Maxi Print, Maxi Film, and Maxi Colour range, it’s possible to introduce vivid colours and custom patterns to your interior design. This is demonstrated to perfection in the award-winning St Joseph’s Primary School Learning Centre design, a vibrant and engaging space that features Maxi Panel, finished with beautiful shades from the Maxi Colour range, adding pops of colour and bringing a joyful energy to the room. Further adding to the appeal, Maxi Print panels displayed custom murals provided by the school, creating unique feature walls that are the star of the show.

When the architects behind the Cobaw Community Health Centre were looking for a durable wall panelling that could incorporate a custom design, Maxi Print on Baltic Birch ticked all the right boxes. Adding colour, pattern and visual interest, the stylish printed plywood wall panels provide a warm welcome to visitors to the centre. Another exciting application of colour on plywood furniture is seen in the bold orange shelving within Diamond Valley College library, a bright and engaging space that is ideal for learning.

Outdoor accents

While the majority of plywood uses are suited to interiors only, in the right conditions ply can be used as a stunning outdoor feature too. Positioned under soffits, Maxi Panel Baltic Birch coated with hard wax oil, is a spectacular addition to the Dendy Park recreation area façade. The striking building is a stunning centrepiece to the multi-sports venue, and our plywood panels add timeless style, contrasting beautifully with the feature brickwork.

Another elegant example of plywood in exterior design can be seen in a popular undercover walkway in the bustling Darling Square community hub in Sydney. Showcasing the natural beauty of timber and the versatility of ply, Maxi Veneer Blackbutt 1/4 cut was the ideal choice to bring the design’s bold, curved lines to life.
